Acne-clearing Honey and Cinnamon Mask or Spot Treatment
Saturday, February 2, 2013
Honey and Cinnamon Mask or Spot Treatment
This is an age old remedy that has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for hundreds of years to cure a wide variety of ailments. Honey and cinnamon both contain anti-microbial properties, preventing the growth of bacterial and fungi.
Honey is an anti-inflammatory that will reduce redness, and cinnamon will improve blood circulation for faster healing. Regular use of this treatment as a mask (2-3 times a week) will help to reduce chronic acne and improve overall skin tone. This can also be used as an overnight spot treatment when pimples threaten to rear their ugly heads.
What you need:
1 tablespoon honey (raw organic honey retains more of its natural properties than processed honey),
1 teaspoon cinnamon powder, one small bowl
How to use it: Wash and dry your face with your regular cleanser, then smear the mixture over your entire face or apply it only to problem areas. Leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse and moisturize as usual. (Can be left on overnight if you can stand the stickiness.)

Dandruff Busting, Hair Hydrating DIY Hair Mask and Conditioner
Sunday, January 27, 2013
Winter can bring on many hair woes; for me it’s a flaky scalp and dry hair. Unfortunately, treating one of the two can lead to the worsening of the other condition. For this reason, I decided to delve a little into natural remedies for dry hair and dandruff.
Through some research and lots of trial and error, I discovered two great DIY recipes. By using two easily available ingredients you can either make an effective pre-shampoo mask or post-wash conditioner to combat dandruff and dry hair.
And the best part is that they literally take two minutes to make with ingredients that you already have in the kitchen!
What you need: Yogurt, Olive Oil, a mixing bowl, a mixing spoon and a measuring spoon and cup (not photographed).
anti dandruff mask Dandruff Busting, Hair Hydrating DIY Hair Mask and Conditioner
Recipe and Application
For Pre-Shampoo Hair Mask:
Mix in four tablespoons of yogurt with one tablespoon of olive oil. Keep beating this mixture until its consistency and color resembles that of mayonnaise. Apply onto to hair and scalp before shampooing, just like you apply hair oil or conditioner. Keep on for at least thirty minutes (the minimum amount of time it takes your hair/skin to absorb things) and then shampoo your hair. No need to apply conditioner. Follow with your usual styling routine.
anti dandruff mask 4 Dandruff Busting, Hair Hydrating DIY Hair Mask and Conditioner
Just a note about this recipe. Because I have mild dandruff and dry hair, I use a mixture of four parts yogurt and one part olive oil. If your main woe is dandruff, change the recipe to five parts yogurt and one part olive oil. Alternatively, if you want to target dry hair, use three parts yogurt and one part olive oil. If you have very long or very short hair, just keep the ratios in mind and you can make more or less of the product.
For Conditioner:
anti dandruff mask 1 Dandruff Busting, Hair Hydrating DIY Hair Mask and Conditioner
Mix in one cup of yogurt with one teaspoon of olive oil. Mix it good. Unlike the mask, the texture and color of this won’t really change. Just make sure the Olive Oil is blended evenly into the yogurt.
anti dandruff mask 3 Dandruff Busting, Hair Hydrating DIY Hair Mask and Conditioner
Apply onto to your scalp and hair after you have shampooed your hair. Rinse thoroughly and dry/style your hair as you do usually, but skip any hair serum or leave-in conditioner because you won’t need it. This conditioner is suitable for all hair types, and no need to modify it for dry or oily hair.
Other Uses: You can also use the mask for your face and the conditioner on the body for even, moisturized skin. Also, although I won’t recommend it, the conditioner can make a nutritious in-shower snack. Y’know just in case hunger strikes while bathing icon wink Dandruff Busting, Hair Hydrating DIY Hair Mask and Conditioner
Why it works: All of us are familiar with Olive Oil’s moisturizing properties on skin and hair, but the oil also hydrates the scalp, and, thus gets rid of the flakes and itchiness. As for the yogurt, while the protein in it hydrates and strengthens the hair, the lactic acid cleanses the scalp with its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.

10 Reasons Why You Should Drink Warm Lemon
Friday, January 25, 2013
Water in the Morning Instead of getting a cup of coffee, why not replace it with a warm water lemon drink!? Below are the good factors to consider.
1. Boosts your immune system: Lemons are high in vitamin C, which is great for fighting colds. They’re high in potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function. Potassium also helps control blood pressure.
2. Balances pH: Drink lemon water everyday and
you’ll reduce your body’s overall acidity. Lemon is one
of the most alkaline foods around. Yes, lemon has citric acid but it does not create acidity in the body once metabolized.
3. Helps with weight loss: Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings. It also has been shown that people who maintain a more alkaline diet lose weight faster.
4. Aids digestion: Lemon juice helps flush out unwanted materials. It encourages the liver to produce bile which is an acid that required for digestion. Efficient digestion reduces heartburn and constipation.
5. Is a diuretic: Lemons increase the rate of urination in the body, which helps purify it. Toxins are, therefore, released at a faster rate which helps keep your urinary tract healthy.
6. Clears skin: The vitamin C component helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear as well. It can actually be applied directly to scars to help reduce their appearance.
7. Freshens breath: Not only this, but it can help relieve tooth pain and gingivitis. The citric acid can erode tooth enamel, so you should monitor this.
8. Relieves respiratory problems: Warm lemon water helps get rid of chest infections and halt those pesky coughs. It’s thought to be helpful to people with asthma and allergies too.
9. Keeps you zen: Vitamin C is one of the first things depleted when you subject your mind and body to stress. As mentioned previously, lemons are chock full of vitamin C.
10. Helps kick the coffee habit: After taking a glass of warm lemon water, most people suggests of less
craving for coffee in the morning.
Why it has to be warm water not cold? Cold water
likely provides a shock or stress factor to the body. It takes energy for your body to process cold water.
The recipe is really simple - a cup of warm water (not hot) and the juice from half of a lemon

Athletes Are Able To Run Faster After Eating Beetroot
Scientists have discovered athletes who eat baked beetroot before a race run put in a faster time.
The purple root vegetable contains high levels of chemicals called nitrates, which have been shown to boost exercise performance.
Researchers at St Louis University in America found athletes were able to run five kilometres faster after eating beetroot than after eating cranberries. It follows other studies that have shown beetroot juice can increase stamina and make muscles more efficient. The St Louis team recruited 11 fit and healthy men and women and asked them to run five kilometres on a treadmill, twice.
Before the first run, the volunteers consumed a portion of baked beetroot, of about 200 grams, or 7 ounces, of beetroot just over an hour before hitting the treadmill. Before the second run, they ate an equivalent amount of cranberry relish, chosen because it has a similar calorific content to beetroot but without the same nitrate levels.
The results, published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, showed that after eating the cranberry relish, the runners averaged a speed of 11.9 kilometres per hour, or 7.3mph.
But after consuming beetroot, their average speed went up to 12.3 kilometres per hour, around 7.6mph.
Researchers said runners appear to be able to speed up in the last section of the run after eating beetroot.
In a report on their findings, they said: "During the last 1.1 miles of the run, speed was five per cent faster in the beetroot trial."
Lead author Margaret Murphy wrote in the journal: "Consumption of nitrate-rich, whole beetroot improves running performance in healthy adults."Because whole vegetables have been shown to have health benefits, whereas nitrates from other sources may have detrimental health effects, it would be prudent for individuals seeking performance benefits to obtain nitrates from whole vegetables, such as beetroot."
It follows previous research on the benefits of beetroot juice carried by out Peninsula Medical School in Exeter.
One published in the Journal of Applied Physiology in 2010, found that after drinking the juice participants muscles were more efficient and used less oxygen while walking.Katie Lansley, a PhD student from the university’s Sport and Health Sciences department and lead author of the study, said:
“As you get older, or if you have conditions which affect your cardiovascular system, the amount of oxygen you can take in to use during exercise drops considerably. This means that, for some people, even simple tasks like walking may not be manageable.
“What we’ve seen in this study is that beetroot juice can actually reduce the amount of oxygen you need to perform even low-intensity exercise. In principle, this effect could help people do things they wouldn’t otherwise be able to do.”
Beetroot juice seemed to widen blood vessels, reducing blood pressure and allowing more blood flow and affected muscle reducing the amount of oxygen needed during activity.
In 2009 Peninsula researchers found drinking beetroot juice could have a powerful effect on stamina and endurance, as well as lower blood pressure.
The researchers, from the University of Exeter and the Peninsula Medical School, also in Exeter, recruited eight healthy young men to complete a series of cycling tests.
They took them twice – after drinking beetroot juice once a day for six days and after drinking blackcurrant cordial.
When tasked with cycling at an easy pace, the men used less oxygen after drinking beetroot, suggesting their muscles were able to do the same amount of work while spending less energy.
When they were asked to cycle for as long as they could before stopping, the beetroot juice allowed them to pedal an extra minute-and-a-half before running out of energy.

Best Vitamins for Acne
Friday, December 30, 2011
Acne is skin condition that is very complex. There is no perfect cure for acne. However, certain measures, when taken care of, can help you prevent this condition, and also reduce the scarring that comes after the breakouts. There are many ways to prevent and control acne, like topical applications, scrubs, chemical peels, exercising, diet, etc. One of the natural ways to prevent acne is to include food items which contain the best vitamins for acne. So what are these vitamins? Here are three important vitamins that help to fight acne, besides other important nutrients that you should include in your diet.
Top 3 Vitamins to Combat Acne
Vitamin A, B and E play an important role to maintain a clear complexion and prevent acne. Let us look at their benefits for the skin.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is one of the best vitamins for acne prevention and control. One of the richest source of this vitamin are carrots. One glass of carrot juice everyday will help you have a clear complexion, will aid in digestion, and prevent acne. Other good sources of vitamin A are spinach, calf’s liver, sweet potato, kale, turnip greens, winter squash, Swiss chard, collard greens and bell peppers. Vitamin A, being an antioxidant, can help keep the pores clear. So either you can eat these food sources to keep your skin clean, or use vitamin A based creams for topical application.
Vitamin B
Among the family of B vitamins, there are many B vitamins which contribute to clear skin. B-complex vitamins helps to improve blood circulation. Thus, scarring is reduced. Also, B12 has shown to be very beneficial for pigmentation. There are some B vitamins which are antioxidant, which help to detox and get rid of impurities in the skin, thus preventing the growth of bacteria and occurrence of breakouts. Some good food sources of B vitamins are pork, seafood, liver, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, chicken, peanuts, egg yolks, bananas, mushrooms, citrus fruits, etc.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is well known for its skin care qualities. Vitamin is a potent antioxidant. It helps to detox and prevent pre-mature aging of the skin. Vitamin E also helps to moisturize the skin. Vitamin E in the form of oil is used to lighten scars and also heal acne breakouts. Vitamin E also protects the skin again UV light damage. Almonds and sunflower seeds are very rich in vitamin E. Other good sources of vitamin E are olives, spinach, papaya, Swiss chard, turnip greens, blueberries and mustard greens.
Other Foods to Fight Acne
Above were the three best vitamins for treating an acne condition. Some other nutrients also greatly help to fight acne. They include nutrients like zinc, omega-3, water, and foods like yogurt and green tea.
Zinc: Zinc is a mineral which is often recommended for acne treatment. However, some believe that zinc doesn’t help with acne treatment at all. If you have low zinc levels, then it could be a reason for an acne condition. So get your zinc level checked. Zinc acts as an anti-inflammatory, which can lower down the symptoms of acne. However, a very small dose of zinc is required by the body daily. Therefore make sure that if you are taking zinc supplements, you stick to the recommended daily intake value.
Water: Water is very important for our health and a clear complexion. Just drinking plenty of water (2 – 3 liters) everyday will flush out the toxins from your body, and will give a glowing complexion. Also, drinking water benefits include bright clear eyes, improved energy levels, and improved blood circulation.
Green Tea: Caffeine is a major cause for bad skin, and should be avoided if you have skin problems. Also, it is dehydrating. So, instead of caffeine, make green tea a part of your acne detox diet. 2 – 3 cups of green tea everyday will provide you with many important vitamins.
Yogurt: Yogurt kills many harmful bacteria in the body, when taken internally. It also contains many other beneficial nutrients which help you maintain good digestive health and skin health. So consider having one to two cups of yogurt everyday. You can also make a yogurt mask and apply it topically.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 essential fatty acids helps to reduce inflammation, and thus help prevent acne. Also, omega-3 is essential for the body and brain health. You can find omega-3 in flax seeds, walnuts, sardines, halibut and salmon. However, avoid omega-6, as it tends to promote inflammation.
These were the nutrients and their food sources which help to control and prevent acne. Include these nutrients in your diet and consume them in the right quantity, to get their benefits. Apart from following a good diet, make sure you follow a good skin care regime to maintain acne free skin. A topical gel or cream can help you control and prevent further breakouts. You can also keep your skin cleaner by regular scrubbing and washing.
