Look dewdrop fresh

Summer can make your skin look dull and if your make-up isn't right for the weather it can turn out to be either a disaster or leave you looking too made-up. Renowned make-up artist Vidya Tikari advises on how to have that fresh, glowing skin this summer.

Question: My skin type is normal. I want to know how to get my make-up base right so that my skin has just the right glow without seeming too made up, particularly during the summer months. - Farzana

Vidya Tikari: In the summer months, you need to stay away from the rich, heavy foundations the winter months called for. Summer make-up is a lot lighter and the textures more translucent as opposed to creamy. Even normal skin-neither dry nor oily-can look oily in summers due to the increased activity of the sebaceous glands. Mineral bases with SPF in powders, compacts or in liquid form is best for this season and you can pick one depending on the coverage you require. For instance, the MAC Mineralize Foundation range has SPF 15 and is well suited to give added protection from the harsh summer sun. However, don't forget to apply a good quality primer before you put on the base as it will not only smoothen out the skin, but also allow the base to sit well. However, make sure the mineral base you choose does not have additives like talcum powder as these will cake up your make-up after a while. A liquid mineral base also works in lending a dewdrop fresh look to your face. Its oil-free formula provides a thin, even coverage preventing excessive sweating.

Since you are most likely going to put up your hair in a ponytail or a bun, remember to extend your base to cover your earlobes and the back of your neck too. While it is best to keep the day look minimal, an evening/night party might require more coverage. A compact works wonders in such a situation.

The tulip bulbs are planted in late October and early November. More than three billion tulips are grown each
year and two-thirds of the vibrant dazzling blooms are exported, mostly to the USA and Germany. After flowers are harvested then the land will be used for vegetables
and other crops.

Your Mouth, Your Health

What Healthy Gums Look Like

Healthy gums should look pink and firm, not red and swollen. To keep gums healthy, practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss at least once a day, see your dentist regularly, and avoid smoking or chewing tobacco.

Find out which health conditions are related to gum disease and mouth problems:
Bacteria Cause Gum Disease and Worse

The research isn't conclusive, but red, swollen, and bleeding gums may point to health problems from heart disease to diabetes. Sometimes, bacteria from your mouth can travel to your bloodstream, setting off an inflammatory reaction elsewhere in your body. Left untreated, gum disease can increase your risk for a host of diseases linked to inflammation. Certain diseases and medications also may cause mouth problems.

Can Mouth Bacteria Affect the Heart?

Some studies show that people with gum disease are more likely to suffer from heart disease than those with healthy, pink gums. Researchers aren't sure why this association exists. One theory is that oral bacteria travel into the bloodstream where it may attach to fatty plaques in the arteries, causing inflammation and setting the stage for a heart attack. Are you are at risk? Talk to your doctor.

Gum Disease and Diabetes

Diabetes can reduce the body’s resistance to infection. Elevated blood sugars increase the risk of developing gum disease. What's more, gum disease can make it harder to keep blood sugar levels in check. Protect your gums by keeping blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible. Brush after each meal and floss daily. See your dentist at least once a year.

Dry Mouth and Tongue Cause Tooth Decay

The 4 million Americans who have Sjögren's syndrome are more prone to have oral health problems, too. With Sjögren's, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks tear ducts and saliva glands, leading to chronically dry eyes and dry mouth (called xerostomia). Saliva helps protect teeth and gums from bacteria that cause cavities and gingivitis. So a perpetually dry mouth is more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease.

Medications That Cause Dry Mouth

Given that a chronically dry mouth raises risk of cavities and gum disease, you may want to check your medicine cabinet. Antihistamines, decongestants, painkillers, and antidepressants are among the drugs that can cause dry mouth. Talk to your doctor or dentist to find out if your medication regimen is affecting your oral health, and what you can do about it.

Stress and Teeth Grinding

If you are stressed, anxious, or depressed, you may be at higher risk for oral health problems. People under stress produce high levels of the hormone cortisol, which wreaks havoc on the gums and body. Stress also leads to poor oral care; more than 50% of people don't brush or floss regularly when stressed. Other stress-related habits include smoking, drinking alcohol, and clenching and grinding teeth (called bruxism).

Osteoporosis and Tooth Loss

The brittle bone disease osteoporosis affects all the bones in your body -- including your jaw bone -- and can cause tooth loss. Bacteria from periodontitis, which is severe gum disease, can also break down the jaw bone. One kind of osteoporosis medication -- bisphosphonates -- may slightly increase the risk of a rare condition called osteonecrosis, which causes bone death of the jaw. Tell your dentist if you take bisphosphonates.

Pale Gums and Anemia

Your mouth may be sore and pale if you're anemic, and your tongue can become swollen and smooth (glossitis). When you have anemia, your body doesn't have enough red blood cells, or your red blood cells don't contain enough hemoglobin. As a result, your body doesn't get enough oxygen. There are different types of anemia, and treatment varies. Talk to your doctor to find out what type you have and how to treat it.

Eating Disorders Erode Tooth Enamel

A dentist may be the first to notice signs of an eating disorder such as bulimia. The stomach acid from repeated vomiting can severely erode tooth enamel. Purging can also trigger swelling in the mouth, throat, and salivary glands as well as bad breath. Anorexia, bulimia, and other eating disorders can also cause serious nutritional shortfalls that can affect the health of your teeth.

Thrush and HIV

People with HIV or AIDS may develop oral thrush, oral warts, fever blisters, canker sores, and hairy leukoplakia, which are white or gray patches on the tongue or the inside of the cheek. The body's weakened immune system and its inability to stave off infections are to blame. People with HIV/AIDS may also experience dry mouth, which increases the risk of tooth decay and can make chewing, eating, swallowing, or talking difficult.

Treating Gum Disease May Help RA

People with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are eight times more likely to have gum disease than people without this autoimmune disease. Inflammation may be the common denominator between the two. Making matters worse: people with RA can have trouble brushing and flossing because of damage to finger joints. The good news is that treating existing gum inflammation and infection can also reduce joint pain and inflammation.

Tooth Loss and Kidney Disease

Adults without teeth may be more likely to have chronic kidney disease than those who still have teeth. Exactly how kidney disease and periodontal disease are linked is not 100% clear yet. But researchers suggest that chronic inflammation may be the common thread. So taking care of your teeth and gums may reduce your risk of developing chronic kidney problems.
Gum Disease and Premature Birth

If you're pregnant and have gum disease, you could be more likely to have a baby that is born too early and too small. Exactly how the two conditions are linked remains poorly understood. Underlying inflammation or infections may be to blame. Pregnancy and its related hormonal changes also appear to worsen gum disease. Talk to your obstetrician or dentist to find out how to protect yourself and your baby.

'Earth's inner core melting'

Monday, May 30, 2011

The inner core of the Earth, which is believed to be growing about one millimetre per year, may be melting, scientists have claimed.
According to researchers at the University of Leeds in England, this melting could actually be linked to activity on the Earth's surface and the findings could help explain how the core generates the planet's magnetic field.
The 2,400km wide inner core which is a ball of solid iron about the same size of the moon is surrounded by an outer core made up mostly of liquid iron-nickel alloy, a highly viscous mantle layer and, topping it off, a solid crust that forms the surface of the planet.
As the Earth cools from the inside out, it is believed that the molten outer core is slowly freezing, leading the inner core to grow at a rate of about one millimetre per year.
"The standard view has been that the inner core is freezing all over and growing, but it appears that there are regions where the core is actually melting," said Sebastian Rost, a seismologist who led the research.
"The net flow of heat from core to mantle ensures that there's still overall freezing of outer core material and it's still growing over time, but by no means is this a uniform process," he was quoted as saying by LiveScience.
As the Earth's interior cools, relatively hot and cold matter churns around inside the planet a process known as convection. The roiling of material in the core, coupled with the spinning of the Earth, is what generates the planet's magnetic field, the scientists said.
Using computer models of convection in the outer core in conjunction with seismology data, the researchers found the flow of heat at the boundary of the core and mantle depended on the overlying mantle.
At times, the nature of the mantle is enough to force heat from the mantle back onto the core, leading to melting in places, the researchers reported in the journal Nature.
"Only a small fraction of the inner core's surface may be melting at any given time," co-researcher Jon Mound said.
"However, given the size of the inner core, even if only one per cent of the surface is melting, which is certainly possible, that corresponds to just under 200,000 square km."
For instance, when it comes to large regions under Africa and the Pacific where the lowermost mantle is hotter than average, the outer core below those areas can become hot enough to start melting the inner core.
On the other hand, beneath seismically active regions around the so-called "Ring of Fire" the cold remnants of oceanic plates sucked to the bottom of the mantle are drawing a lot of heat from the core, helping it freeze.
These findings suggest "that the whole dynamics of the Earth's core are in some way linked to plate tectonics, which isn't at all obvious from surface observations," Mound said.
"The localised melting theory could also explain other seismic observations for example, why seismic waves from earthquakes travel faster through some parts of the core than others," Rost said.

When they were unable to operate the tap, this mother monkey opened the tap for them, allowed them to drink water, drank some water herself and then closed the tap before leaving the scene.

Most Dangerous Dogs In The World !

22 reported dog bite related human fatalities in the United States in 2004, 2007 - 29 human fatalities, 2008 - 26. In 2009, there were 33 human fatalities. 45% of the attacks occurred to adults over the age of 18, and 55% occurred to ages below. Pit bull type dogs were responsible for 67% of fatalities, the next closest breed was the rottweiler at 12%. But all dog breeds are potentially dangerous. In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that 25 breeds of dogs were involved in 238 fatal dog bites from 1979-1998. Here it is the compiled list of the most dangerous dog breeds:

10. Dalmatian (Weight: 40-70 lbs.)

This breed is distinguished by intelligence and perfect memory, independence and survival instincts. Sometimes Dalmatians can be aggressive towards people.

9. Boxer (Weight: 50-70 lbs.)

These dogs are intelligent, frisky and full of energy. It is not so easy to train them as they are self-willed breed. In addition, boxers are not typically aggressive by nature.

8. Presa Canario ( Weight: 80-115 lbs.)

Doberman Pinschers are famed by such features as alertness, intelligence and loyalty. Therefore they are considered to be one of the best guard dog breeds. The dog usually attacks only in case its family is in danger or when being provoked.

7. Chow Chow (Weight: 50-70 lbs.)

It is well known that an attack of this guard dog can bring to the death any prey. One of the main features of this dog is fearlessness, huge power and man-stopping ability.

6. Doberman Pinschers (Weight: 65-90 lbs.)

The Chow Chow seems to be distant and independent, however they require staunch attention. If badly bred they can become aggressive dogs.

5. Alaskan Malamutes (Weight: 75-100 lbs.)

This breed requires a lot of exercises to be happy as being bored they become disobedient. On the whole their characteristic features are energy and activity.

4. Huskies (Weight: 44-66 lbs.)

Despite of their energy and intelligence this breed is not regarded a good guard dog. It is caused by its kind temperament and personality characteristics. However it should be marked that between 1979 and 1997 fifteen fatal cases were caused by huskies.

3. German Shepherds (Weight: 70-100 lbs.)

This breed of dogs is known as a smart and vigilant one. As German Shepherds proved to be confident and fearless local authorities such as the police K-9 unit use German Shepherds as a police dog.

2. Rottweilers (Weight: 100-130 lbs.)

Due to their intense territorial instinct these dogs are very aggressive. Rottweilers are commonly used as guard dogs.

1. Pit Bulls (Weight: 55-65 lbs.)

Pit bull is one of the most brave and dauntless dogs that usually takes on any opponent. Therefore they take part in dog fighting. It is common knowledge that this dog breed can even mangle the human to death as pit bull locks its jaws onto the booty until it is dead.
- For each US dog bite fatality there are about 670 hospitalizations and 16,000 emergency room visits, 21,000 other medical visits (office and clinic), and 187,000 non-medically treated bites
- 46.1% (nearly half) of dog bite injuries were triaged in emergency rooms as "urgent-emergent"
- Dog bites are the second highest reason why children seek emergency treatment

That's about 60,000 bites per fatality and that information is dated. It is reported today that a US citizen is bitten by a dog every 75 seconds.
